Founded in 1891 by O.M. Carter, Houston Heights was originally a streetcar suburb of Houston, and the area is presently home to a population of around 42,000. The community has experienced phenomenal changes since its development, and is known as the first "master-planned community" in Texas. The community attracts many families and young professionals who appreciate the Heights in Houston's small-town character, historical features, beautiful neighborhoods, and its proximity to downtown.

The Heights in Houston community was designated as a Historic Multiple Resource Area by the National Park Service in 1983, and is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The City of Houston designated Houston Heights as an official Historic District of the city, and the city thus received an official Texas Historical Marker that commemorates the founding of the Houston Heights community.
